Chapter 2 - The Whisper Before the Sirens

“He always does that when he’s afraid.”

Madeline’s voice was almost casual.

Nicole looked up sharply.

“What did you say?”

Luke’s breathing came in short, uneven pulls. Brandon crouched beside them, one hand supporting the boy’s back while another relative called emergency services.

Madeline picked a piece of cobbler from her sweater sleeve.

“I said he’s dramatic. Just like his mother.”

Nicole rose so quickly that Brandon had to catch Luke against his chest.

“You knew he had trouble breathing?”

Madeline’s eyes narrowed.

“I know children perform when adults reward weakness.”

Luke whimpered and gripped Brandon’s collar.

Nicole’s phone lay on the wooden side table. She snatched it up and opened Luke’s medical notes, trying to remember every instruction the pediatrician had given after two earlier fainting spells.

Brandon stared at his mother.

“You’ve seen this before?”

Madeline did not answer.

That silence was more frightening than any confession.

Outside, distant sirens grew louder.

Relatives began moving aside, but no one approached Madeline. The authority she had carried into every family gathering seemed to crack under the weight of their stares.

Nicole knelt again and brushed Luke’s damp blond hair from his forehead.

“Stay with me, baby.”

Luke blinked at her.

“Grandma hates me.”

Nicole’s face tightened.

“No. She doesn’t get to decide who you are.”

Madeline finally reached for her purse.

As she turned toward the door, a folded photograph slipped from the side pocket and landed faceup on the carpet.

Brandon saw it first.

It showed him as a child, standing beside another little boy who looked almost exactly like Luke.

But Brandon had never seen that boy before.

👉 The name written on the back of the photograph belonged to someone Brandon had been told died before he was born.
