Chapter 15 - The Name My Mother Never Said

The backyard became silent.
The barbecue.
The picnic table.
The scattered plates.
Everything looked ordinary.
But nothing was ordinary anymore.
I held the phone.
My mother looked at me.
Not with fear.
With guilt.
The caller spoke again.
“You deserve the truth.”
I looked toward the sedan.
The window remained lowered only slightly.
Enough to remind us someone was there.
The sergeant stood beside me.
Dana waited.
Tyler looked broken.
For years, he believed humiliating me would destroy me.
He never understood.
The humiliation was only a distraction.
The real battle had always been hidden.
I looked at my mother.
“Tell me.”
Her lips trembled.
“I tried to protect you from him.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the sedan.
Then whispered the name.
The name I had spent six years running from.
The name that made the sergeant go completely still.
The name that made Dana slowly reach for the sealed file.
And the name that explained why someone had been waiting for me to come back.
