Chapter 6 - The Secret My Mother Protected

Dana asked everyone to step back.

Nobody argued.

Not anymore.

Tyler removed the remaining cuff.

My wrist fell forward.

The metal marks were visible.

He looked at them.

For the first time, guilt appeared.

Briefly.

Then fear replaced it.

Because he understood.

He had done something irreversible.

The sergeant approached me.

“Are you ready?”

I looked at the sedan.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I will be.”

Dana opened the tote bag.

Inside were documents.

Old records.

A sealed package.

And something wrapped carefully.

My mother closed her eyes.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“You promised.”

Her voice was barely audible.

I looked at her.

“Who did you promise?”

She didn’t answer.

That was when I realized.

This was never about Tyler.

The barbecue.

The humiliation.

The arrest.

It was all a distraction.

Someone wanted me emotional.

Someone wanted me exposed.

Someone wanted me to react.

But they forgot one thing.

I was trained not to react.

I was trained to observe.

And I had been watching everyone.
