Chapter 8 - The Voice From Six Years Ago

I couldn’t speak.

Not because I didn’t know the voice.

Because I did.

The person on the other end knew exactly what to say.

Exactly when to call.

Exactly how to break through the walls I built.

“Evie.”

I closed my eyes.

The sergeant noticed.

Dana noticed.

My mother started crying.

Tyler looked confused.

He finally understood something.

Everyone knew pieces of my life except him.

The caller continued.

“You need to leave.”

I looked at the sedan.

“You’re here?”

Silence.

Then:

“I was always here.”

The call ended.

I lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Dana looked toward the sedan.

“The passenger?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.”

But I did know one thing.

The person inside knew me.

May you like

And they knew my family.
