Chapter 5 - The Car My Mother Feared

The sedan stopped beyond the trees.

Nobody stepped out.

Nobody spoke.

But the entire backyard felt different.

My mother’s hands were shaking.

I had seen my mother afraid before.

But never like this.

“Mom.”

She looked at me.

For a moment, I saw something I hadn’t seen in years.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

Tyler noticed.

“You know who that is?”

She didn’t answer.

Dana watched her carefully.

“Mrs. Klein.”

My mother swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

A lie.

Everyone heard it.

The sergeant stood beside me.

The same man who saluted me minutes earlier now looked toward the vehicle like he was preparing for something serious.

I hated that feeling.

The feeling of my old life returning.

The life I escaped.

The life I buried.

Then my phone vibrated again.

Unknown number.

One message.

“Ask her why she kept the truth from you.”

I looked at my mother.

She looked away.

That hurt.

More than Tyler.

Because Tyler was obvious.

My mother wasn’t.
