Chapter 7 - The File Hidden In My Family’s Hands

The documents inside the bag were old.

Too old to be connected only to today.

That meant planning.

Years of planning.

I looked at my mother.

“How long?”

She didn’t answer.

“How long did you know?”

Her eyes filled.

“I was protecting you.”

Those words were supposed to comfort me.

They didn’t.

Because protection without honesty becomes control.

Dana examined the documents.

The sergeant remained silent.

Then he found something.

A name.

A name that made his expression change.

Not shock.

Recognition.

Tyler saw it.

“What?”

Nobody answered.

He stepped closer.

The sergeant stopped him.

“Stay back.”

For the first time, Tyler listened.

The man who thought fear was power finally understood what real power looked like.

Then my phone rang.

Not a message.

A call.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Evie.”

My entire body froze.

May you like

Because nobody had called me that in years.
