Chapter 2 - The Moment Tyler Realized He Was Wrong

Nobody laughed anymore.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The same relatives who watched quietly now avoided eye contact.

The same people who enjoyed Tyler’s little performance suddenly looked nervous.

Tyler stared at the sergeant.

Then at me.

Then back at the sergeant.

“General?”

The word barely left his mouth.

He looked like someone who had just discovered the person he tried to humiliate was someone he never understood.

The sergeant didn’t repeat himself.

He didn’t need to.

Authority filled the silence.

Tyler slowly removed his hand from my shoulder.

But he didn’t release the cuffs.

That told me everything.

He was still trying to hold onto control.

Dana walked around the SUV.

Dark government suit.

Calm expression.

No anger.

That was more intimidating.

Angry people lose control.

Calm people usually know exactly what they’re doing.

She looked at Tyler.

“Deputy.”

He straightened.

“I’m handling a family situation.”

Dana glanced at my wrist.

“No.”

A pause.

“You’re abusing authority.”

The backyard became completely silent.

My mother looked away.

She had been watching the entire time.

That hurt more than Tyler’s grip.

Because Tyler was cruel.

But my family allowed it.

Dana pointed toward the handcuffs.

“Release her.”

Tyler’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what she did.”

I looked at him.

Neither did he.

Not really.

He knew the version of me he created in his head.

The difficult cousin.

The arrogant woman.

The person who refused to explain herself.

He never knew why.

He never asked.

Then my phone vibrated.

Still trapped in my back pocket.

Everyone heard it.

Tyler looked at me.

The sergeant noticed.

Dana noticed.

And my mother suddenly looked toward the dessert table.

Toward the canvas tote bag hidden underneath.

Only for a second.

But Dana saw.

So did I.

My mother’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not embarrassment.

Not guilt.

May you like

Fear.
