Chapter 4 - The Bag Under The Dessert Table

The sergeant carefully lifted the tote bag.
My mother immediately stepped forward.
Too quickly.
“Don’t.”
Everyone looked at her.
She froze.
Dana’s eyes narrowed.
“Why not?”
My mother didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
The reaction was enough.
Tyler looked between us.
“You knew?”
My mother looked away.
That was the answer.
The bag was placed on the table.
Nobody opened it.
Not yet.
Because sometimes the anticipation reveals more than the truth itself.
Tyler looked at me.
“You set this up?”
I almost smiled.
“No.”
Because if I had planned this…
He never would have touched me.
He never would have gotten close enough.
Dana looked at the sergeant.
“Secure the area.”
He nodded.
Family members started backing away.
The barbecue was over.
The celebration was gone.
All that remained was the truth.
Then the sergeant looked at me.
“General, we need to discuss the incoming vehicle.”
I turned.
“Vehicle?”
He looked toward the road.
A dark sedan was approaching.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Not like someone arriving.
Like someone watching.
My mother saw it.
May you like
And went completely pale.
