The collar was removed carefully.
Inside was a small metal compartment.
Everyone became silent.
Cole opened it.
Inside was something unexpected.
Not a weapon.
Not a device.
A small piece of paper.
A name.
A date.
And a symbol.
Colonel Willis stared.
He recognized it.
“You knew.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“I suspected.”
That answer bothered him.
Because it meant someone had hidden the truth from both of us.
The woman with the folder looked at Atlas.
“He carried the final piece.”
I touched the dog’s head through the mesh.
“You protected him.”
Atlas closed his eyes.
For the first time all day…
He looked peaceful.
Then the alarm sounded again.
Someone was coming.
Not searching.
