Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Knew My Name

The woman walked into the kennel like she belonged there.

No hesitation.

No confusion.

She looked at Colonel Willis first.

Then Atlas.

Then me.

“Mrs. Mercer.”

My fingers tightened around my handbag.

I didn’t know her.

But she knew me.

Colonel Willis looked uncomfortable.

“Why are you here?”

She handed him the sealed folder.

“Because the decision changed.”

Nobody spoke.

Dr. Porter looked at the folder.

“The termination order?”

The woman nodded.

“Suspended.”

Atlas’s life had just been extended.

But that wasn’t what caught my attention.

The folder.

The seal.

The way Colonel Willis held it.

Like it contained something dangerous.

The woman looked at Atlas.

“He wasn’t protecting the command.”

She looked at me.

“He was protecting the person who knew it.”

My heart tightened.

“Who sent you?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Atlas.

“He chose correctly.”

Colonel Willis opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because Atlas had moved.

He was staring at the woman.

Not afraid.
