Chapter 8 - The Promise I Made To Noah

I had avoided this moment for years.

Not because I was afraid.

Because promises matter.

Especially promises made to someone who cannot return to explain them.

Colonel Willis asked:

“Did Noah give you that command?”

I looked at Atlas.

“Yes.”

Everyone reacted.

Dr. Porter whispered:

“When?”

“Before he died.”

Silence.

The words changed the room.

Noah’s death was not just history.

It was still affecting everyone standing there.

The woman with the folder looked at me.

“You kept your promise.”

I nodded.

“But I failed him.”

Nobody expected that.

Colonel Willis frowned.

“How?”

I looked at Atlas.

“Because I couldn’t bring him home.”

Atlas lowered his head.

The dog that survived everything…

Still carried loss.

Then the woman opened the folder again.

This time, she removed one page.

Not showing it.

Just holding it.

“There is one final decision.”

Colonel Willis looked at her.

“About Atlas?”

She looked at me.

“No.”

A pause.

“About Margaret.”
