Chapter 4 - The Name Hidden In The Archives

My name appeared on the screen.
And suddenly everyone looked at me differently.
Not like an old woman who walked into the wrong room.
Like someone who had stepped back into a world she left behind.
Colonel Willis dismissed the younger officer.
Then he faced me.
“You have information.”
It wasn’t a question.
I held my handbag tighter.
“I have memories.”
“That’s not enough.”
“It was enough for Atlas.”
That answer bothered him.
Because it was true.
Atlas didn’t need paperwork.
He didn’t need proof.
He knew.
Dr. Porter looked at the dog.
“He has been declining since Noah’s death.”
The room became quiet.
There it was.
The name again.
Noah.
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Not because I was weak.
Because some names still carried weight.
Colonel Willis noticed.
“You knew him.”
I looked at Atlas.
“Yes.”
“How?”
I stayed silent.
He stepped closer.
“Mrs. Mercer, a military working dog was scheduled for termination because every handler failed.”
A pause.
“Then you walked in and gave a command nobody knows.”
I looked at him.
“Someone knew.”
“Who?”
I looked down.
“Noah.”
The name changed everything.
Because everyone in the room knew.
Noah wasn’t just another soldier.
He was someone whose story had been sealed.
Then Atlas suddenly moved.
He pushed his paw against the mesh.
Under his collar, something shifted.
A small metal edge appeared.
Colonel Willis saw it.
His face changed.
“What is that?”
Nobody answered.
Because Atlas had something hidden.

Something Noah left behind.
