Chapter 7 - The Connection Atlas Never Forgot

Atlas recognized her.
That scared everyone more than anything else.
Because Atlas had forgotten almost everyone.
Handlers.
Doctors.
Commands.
But not her.
The woman stepped closer.
“Hello, Atlas.”
His tail moved slightly.
A small movement.
But enough.
Dr. Porter covered her mouth.
“That’s impossible.”
The woman looked at me.
“Noah knew he would forget.”
My throat tightened.
“Forget what?”
She looked at the collar.
Then at me.
“Everything except what mattered.”
Colonel Willis remained silent.
Because he understood.
There were pieces of this story he never knew.
That bothered him.
The woman opened the folder slightly.
Not enough to reveal the contents.
Just enough for Colonel Willis to see something.
His face changed.
Shock.
Then regret.
“What did Noah do?”
She closed the folder.
“That’s not the question.”
“What is?”
She looked at me.
“The question is why Margaret Mercer was the only person he trusted with the final command.”
Everyone looked at me.
I looked away.
Because some secrets were not mine alone.
Atlas pressed his muzzle against the mesh again.
