I stared at the message.
Promise.
That word carried weight.
I looked at Linda.

The soldier asked:
“Do you know what this means?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
That was the first honest answer I had given all day.

“Dad?”

The soldier stepped toward the doorway.
“We need to secure this location.”
Outside, movement.
More personnel.
Ryan heard it.
His face changed again.
The man who believed he controlled Emily’s world was realizing he never controlled anything.

“He was never supposed to come back.”
Everyone turned.
“Who?”
