Ryan stared at his phone.
Nobody spoke.
The ringtone filled the room.
Again.
Again.
He finally answered.
“Hello?”
His voice was different.
Not confident.
Careful.
I watched him listen.
His face slowly changed.
The person on the other end had power over him.
Not because they threatened him.
Because Ryan obeyed.
He ended the call quickly.
The soldier looked at him.
“Who was that?”
“No one.”
A predictable answer.
I looked at Emily.
She noticed too.
She had lived with him.
She knew.
Ryan wasn’t just afraid of being exposed.
He was afraid of someone else.
The soldier checked his notes.
“There are multiple names connected.”
Ryan looked up.
“What names?”
The soldier didn’t answer.
Then the bedroom lights flickered.
A small thing.
But Ryan looked toward the hallway.
Like he expected someone.
I saw it.
The panic.
The anticipation.
