Chapter 5 - The Story Emily Was Afraid To Tell

Emily sat on the edge of the bed.

The blanket covered her again.

But nothing could cover the truth anymore.

She held my hand.

Her fingers were cold.

“I thought you wouldn’t believe me.”

Those words hurt more than anything else.

Because my daughter’s biggest fear wasn’t Ryan.

It was that she would have no one.

“Why?”

She looked down.

“Because he made sure everyone thought I was unstable.”

Ryan looked away.

That reaction confirmed it.

He had built a story.

And expected everyone to accept it.

Emily explained the small things.

The comments.

The isolation.

The threats.

The moments where she questioned herself.

No dramatic speech.

No exaggeration.

Just pieces.

Enough pieces to understand.

Linda interrupted.

“She’s emotional.”

I turned toward her.

“She’s pregnant.”

Silence.

The soldier continued taking notes.

Ryan looked toward the hallway.

Still thinking.

Still planning.

That worried me.

Because desperate people make mistakes.

But they can also become dangerous.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

He rejected the call.

A second later…

The phone rang again.

This time, the soldier noticed the number.
