Chapter 9 - The Evidence Ryan Feared

Ryan took one step back.

That was all.

But it told me everything.

He recognized something.

The soldier closed the folder.

“Not here.”

Ryan looked angry again.

Fear turning into aggression.

Predictable.

“I didn’t do anything.”

The soldier looked at him.

“Then prove it.”

Silence.

Emily watched.

No longer confused.

No longer apologizing.

She was finally seeing him clearly.

Linda whispered:

“This was never supposed to happen.”

I turned.

“What wasn’t?”

She looked away.

That was the question.

The one nobody wanted.

Then Emily’s phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown sender.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

She handed it to me.

One sentence.
