The hallway remained empty.
But everyone was watching it.
Linda’s fear was obvious.
She had spent years controlling the story.
Now someone else was approaching.
Someone she couldn’t control.
The soldier moved closer to the door.
Ryan whispered:
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
I looked at him.
“What was supposed to happen?”
He didn’t answer.
Emily did.
“He was supposed to make me disappear.”
The room went silent.
My daughter said it calmly.
That was worse.
Because she had accepted the possibility.
I looked at Ryan.
“You planned to remove her.”
He looked down.
No denial.
Then footsteps stopped outside.
Everyone turned.
A shadow appeared beneath the doorway.
Not one person.
Several.
Ryan stepped backward.
Linda grabbed the wall.
And I realized…
The soldiers were not here because of Emily.
