Chapter 4 - The Report With Ryan’s Name

The folder stayed closed.

I wanted answers.

But I knew better than most.

Timing mattered.

The soldier explained only what was necessary.

There had been concerns.

Patterns.

Information collected over time.

Not a single incident.

A pattern.

That word changed everything.

Because abuse was rarely one moment.

It was a series of choices.

Ryan kept shaking his head.

“This is ridiculous.”

The soldier looked at him.

“Then you should have no problem answering questions.”

Ryan went silent.

Emily watched him.

And I saw something painful.

She was realizing she had been right all along.

The doubt was leaving.

The guilt was arriving.

Linda moved closer to Ryan.

“You said this was handled.”

That sentence escaped before she could stop it.

Everyone heard.

Emily looked at her.

“Handled?”

Linda froze.

Ryan closed his eyes.

A mistake.

A small one.

But enough.

I stepped closer.

“What was handled?”

Nobody answered.

Then Emily whispered:

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Her eyes filled.

Not because I apologized.

Because someone finally believed her.

The soldier opened his notebook.

“Mrs. Bennett, we need your statement.”

Emily looked afraid.

I took her hand.

“You tell only the truth.”

She nodded.

Then Ryan suddenly spoke.

“She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

I looked at him.

“You’re still doing it.”

“What?”

“Trying to decide her reality.”

For the first time…

Ryan looked small.
