Chapter 2 - The Soldiers Waiting Outside The Door
Nobody answered.
That silence told me more than words could.
Ryan had spent months convincing Emily she was alone.
That nobody would believe her.
That nobody would come.
But now two soldiers stood outside the bedroom.
And Ryan looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
I noticed.
A person can fake confidence.
They cannot fake fear.
Emily stayed behind me.
I could feel her trembling.
Not just from pain.
From confusion.
She had spent so long being told she had no power that she didn’t know what to do when someone finally stood beside her.
Linda looked toward the doorway.
“Who are they?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I wanted Ryan to answer.
He didn’t.
His eyes kept moving.
The door.
The hallway.
The soldiers.

“You don’t understand.”
His voice was quieter now.
That was new.
Ryan always spoke like every room belonged to him.
Now he sounded like someone losing control.
I stepped closer.
“No.”
My voice stayed calm.
“You’re right.”
A pause.
“I don’t understand why my daughter is afraid in her own home.”
Emily closed her eyes.
A tear moved down her cheek.
Ryan saw it.
And tried to recover.
“She fell.”
The lie was immediate.
Too immediate.
Linda nodded.
“She’s clumsy.”
I looked at her.
A mother.
A woman who should have protected Emily.
Instead, she helped explain away the damage.
I felt something break.
Not my patience.
My trust.
Then one of the soldiers outside spoke.
“Colonel Bennett.”
Ryan froze.
Because they weren’t asking for me.
They were confirming me.
The soldiers knew exactly who I was.
Emily looked at me.
“Dad…”
I turned slightly.
“I’m here.”
Those two words seemed to surprise her.
Because she had forgotten what safety felt like.
The soldier continued:
“We need to speak with you.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
He immediately realized his mistake.
