Chapter 3 - The Fear Behind Ryan’s Silence

Ryan tried to smile.

It failed.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.”

I looked at him.

“That’s what people say when they know it is already big.”

Linda stepped between us.

“This is a private family matter.”

I almost laughed.

Private.

That was the word people used when they wanted suffering hidden.

I looked at Emily.

A pregnant woman covered in bruises.

A woman who had been afraid to speak.

There was nothing private about that anymore.

The soldier entered only after I nodded.

He stayed professional.

Controlled.

No unnecessary movement.

No drama.

That bothered Ryan more than anger would have.

People like him understand anger.

They know how to manipulate it.

Control scares them.

The soldier handed me a small folder.

Not opened.

Not explained.

Just delivered.

Ryan saw it.

His expression changed.

“What is that?”

I looked at him.

“Why do you care?”

He had no answer.

The soldier looked at Ryan.

“Mr. Ryan Carter?”

Ryan stiffened.

“Yes.”

The soldier nodded.

“Then we need to discuss your name appearing in a report.”

Emily looked confused.

“What report?”

Nobody answered immediately.

That was the worst part.

Because she deserved answers.

She had been denied them long enough.

I looked at Ryan.

“How long?”

He looked away.

That was enough.
