Leah found an old email on the second phone.
Celeste sent it to Derek four years earlier.
The subject line contained Sarah’s full name.
The message included a newspaper article about the Vance Fallen Marines Foundation.
Sarah appeared in a photograph beside Frank.
Celeste wrote:
THE DAUGHTER RECEIVES HER TRUST NEXT YEAR.
Derek replied:
SHE’S SINGLE.
Sarah read the exchange twice.
Their first meeting happened three weeks later at a veterans’ charity dinner.
Derek told her he attended because he respected military families.
In reality, Celeste purchased his ticket.
She gave him details.
Sarah liked quiet restaurants.
She studied childhood education.
She grieved her brother privately.
She trusted people who listened.
Derek built himself around what she needed.
He did not force love immediately.
He performed patience.
That made the betrayal more complete.
“Was any of it real?” Sarah asked.
Derek looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Which part?”
“Our marriage.”
“You researched my inheritance before learning my favorite color.”
“I fell in love later.”
“After the account opened?”
He said nothing.
Sarah’s tears came slowly.
Frank remained near her but did not interrupt.
She needed to hear the silence for herself.
Derek finally said:
“I was going to leave the money alone.”
“What changed?”
“Life got expensive.”
She looked around the filthy room.
The pizza boxes.
The game console.
The unopened bills.
