Chapter 25 - The Verdict

The jury found Derek guilty on every major fraud count.

He was also convicted of unlawful imprisonment, financial exploitation, and domestic assault.

Celeste was convicted of conspiracy, wire fraud, identity theft, and theft from a charitable organization.

Derek received fourteen years across federal and state sentences.

Celeste received eleven.

The judge ordered restitution to the foundation, Sarah, Leah, and the affected military families.

Before sentencing, Derek addressed Sarah.

“I loved you.”

Sarah believed he believed that.

That was the tragedy.

His definition of love allowed ownership.

He continued:

“I never wanted things to go this far.”

Sarah answered only when the judge permitted.

“They went as far as you believed you could take them.”

Derek looked down.

The court record would not call him a stressed husband.

A failed entrepreneur.

It named what he did.
