Chapter 4 - The Uniform Was Not an Accident
Frank had not come directly from home.
He had come from a Marine memorial ceremony.
That was why he wore his dress uniform.
That morning, the Vance Fallen Marines Foundation announced a new scholarship for children of deceased service members.
Sarah’s late brother, Michael, had died in Afghanistan twelve years earlier.
Frank created the foundation from survivor benefits, donations, and a portion of Michael’s insurance payment.
Derek volunteered to manage online fundraising.
He claimed his marketing experience could double donations.
For the first year, everything appeared legitimate.
Then scholarship payments began arriving late.
Derek blamed administrative delays.
Frank believed him.
He had wanted to believe that his son-in-law respected Michael’s memory.
During the memorial ceremony, Frank received an anonymous message.
A photograph of Sarah’s bruised arm.
A copy of a transfer from the foundation to Derek’s company.
And five words:
SARAH IS NOT SAFE TODAY.
The message came from a temporary number.
Frank left the ceremony immediately.
He did not know whether Sarah sent it.
He did not know who else knew.
He only knew the photograph was recent because Sarah wore the same gray maternity dress she had shown him on a video call that week.
Now Leah admitted she sent it.
“I tried calling you normally,” she said. “Derek had blocked your number on the home network.”
Sarah stared at him.
“You told me Dad stopped checking on me.”
Derek’s eyes hardened.
“He judged our marriage.”
“He asked why I sounded afraid.”
“You made everything sound worse than it was.”
Frank looked around the room.
The mess.
The locked door.
The forged transfers.
The bruise.
The hidden phone.
“What part are we misunderstanding?” he asked.
Derek had no answer.
Frank’s uniform had seemed ceremonial when he entered.
