Chapter 20 - The House Belonged to Sarah
The property records revealed another lie.
The living room was not jointly owned.
Sarah purchased the house using part of Michael’s survivor trust.
Derek’s name had never been added to the deed because the trust prohibited transfer during the first five years.
Derek told Sarah the closing attorney made a mistake.
In reality, he knew he had no ownership.
That was why he pressured her to sign refinancing documents.
He wanted cash from a house that was never his.
The legal reality changed everything.
Derek could not force Sarah out.
He could not sell.
He could not claim the property as his separate asset.
A court issued a protective order removing him from the home.
When told he had thirty minutes to collect clothing under supervision, Derek looked toward the black sectional sofa.
The television.
The console.
The clutter he treated as proof of ownership.
None of it gave him the right to remain.
Sarah did not watch him pack.
She stayed with Frank.
