Chapter 23 - Sarah Speaks Without Apologizing
Sarah’s testimony lasted three hours.
She described the rules.
The money.
The medical monitoring.
The bruises.
The cleaning cloth.
The locked door.
Derek’s attorney asked why she stayed.
“I loved him.”
“Even after he frightened you?”
“Yes.”
“Even after he restricted your accounts?”
“I did not understand the accounts.”
“You had a college education.”
Sarah paused.
Shame rose automatically.
Then she recognized the trap.
“Education does not make deception impossible.”
The attorney asked why she apologized in messages.
“Because apologies ended arguments faster.”
“Were they sincere?”
“They were survival.”
He asked whether Derek ever said he would kill her.
“No.”
“Did he ever punch you?”
“No.”
“Kick you?”
“No.”
“Then what exactly were you afraid of?”
Sarah looked directly at Derek.
“That one day he would do something worse after convincing everyone nothing before it counted.”
No one in the courtroom moved.
