Chapter 1 - THE YELLOW HAT

Lily was already crying when she lifted the yellow hat off her head.
For half a second, I didn’t understand what I was looking at.
My five-year-old daughter had left my house that morning with long brown hair falling halfway down her back.
Now it had been hacked into crooked patches around her ears and neck.
One side was longer than the other.
A small dried line of blood sat just above her left ear.
My hand tightened around the clear plastic bag I was carrying.
Inside was Lily’s severed braid.
I had found it on the floor beside Vanessa’s beauty table less than thirty seconds earlier.
“Aunt Vanessa said my hair was too pretty.”
Lily’s voice broke on the last word.
I looked at my younger sister.
Vanessa stood beside the beauty table in a cream blouse, dark trousers, and heels, watching me with an expression so calm it made my stomach turn.
She pointed at Lily.
“She got into the scissors herself.”
I stared at her.
Then at the braid.
Then at the straight line where somebody had tied an elastic around Lily’s hair before cutting through it.
A five-year-old had not done that alone.
“My five-year-old would never cut her own hair.”
I crossed the room before I had time to think.
My palm struck Vanessa across the face.
She fell sideways onto the floor.
Lily screamed my name.
The sound should have stopped me.
It didn’t.
An electric clipper sat on Vanessa’s beauty table.
I grabbed it, switched it on, and ran it through several sections of Vanessa’s carefully styled hair before throwing it back onto the table.
Her scream filled the room.
“What is wrong with you?”
I stood over her breathing hard.
Then I looked at Lily.
She had backed against the wall.
Her eyes were wide.
That was when shame hit me.
Whatever Vanessa had done, Lily had just watched me become violent too.
I stepped away immediately.
“Lily, come here.”
She didn’t move at first.
That hurt.
Then she slowly crossed the room and let me kneel beside her.
I examined the dried blood without touching the skin.
“Did she cut you?”
Lily shook her head, then nodded.
“I moved.”
Vanessa pushed herself upright.
“She jerked her head while I was fixing it.”
“You just said she cut it herself.”
Vanessa froze.
Only for an instant.
But I heard the contradiction.
“So which is it?”
“She grabbed the scissors first. I tried to fix what she did.”
Lily whispered, “No.”
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“Lily.”
The warning in my sister’s voice was unmistakable.
I stood between them.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa’s face was turning red where I had hit her.
“You assaulted me.”
“I know.”
“You cut my hair.”
“I know.”
“You think saying that makes it okay?”
“No.”
Her expression shifted.
She had expected an argument.
Instead, I looked toward the beauty table.
A tablet was lying beside the clippers.
Its screen was still awake.
There was a video thumbnail in the center.
Vanessa sitting in the exact chair beside us.
Lily standing in front of her wearing the pale pink dress she still had on.
The yellow hat sat on the table.
I picked up the tablet.
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
“Give me that.”
I pressed play.
The video opened in the middle of a saved livestream.
I heard Lily crying before I saw anything clearly.
Then Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.
“Hold still, or Daddy’s going to think you ruined it yourself.”
Every part of me went cold.
Vanessa lunged for the tablet.
I jerked it out of reach.
She reached again.
“Daniel, give it back!”
I barely heard her.
On-screen, Lily was sitting in the beauty chair.
Her long braid was tied neatly behind her.
Vanessa held a pair of scissors above it.
My daughter looked terrified.
Then an electronic notification sounded from the livestream.
A payment.
Twenty-five dollars.
A comment flashed beneath it.
CUT THE BRAID.
Vanessa smiled at the camera.

And the version of my sister I thought I knew disappeared in front of me.
