Chapter 9 - THE ADMINISTRATOR ARCHIVE

I told Diane to unplug the computer immediately.
She didn’t understand.
“From the wall?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel—”
“Now.”
I heard movement.
Then silence.
“It’s unplugged.”
“Disconnect your router too.”
“Why?”
“Because someone is remotely deleting files.”
Diane stopped asking questions.
Within two minutes, her house was offline.
I looked through the front camera again.
Vanessa was still outside.
“Come in.”
She stared at the lens.
“What?”
“Slowly.”
I unlocked the door but kept Lily behind me.
Vanessa entered.
My daughter backed away immediately.
Vanessa saw it.
That reaction seemed to hurt her more than my slap had.
“Lily…”
“No.”
I stepped between them.
“You do not speak to her unless she wants you to.”
Vanessa nodded.
For once, no argument.
We drove to Diane’s house with Lily beside me.
Vanessa followed in her own car.
I refused to leave Lily alone with her.
At Diane’s house, the computer screen was black.
I unplugged the external hard drive too.
Vanessa looked at the machine.
“Olivia installed Northline software on this.”
“When?”
“Last year.”
Diane stared at her.
“You told me it was photo backup.”
“It included photo backup.”
“You used me.”
Vanessa looked away.
Diane’s voice sharpened.
“Did you use my signature?”
“I didn’t.”
“Who did?”
“Olivia handled accounts.”
That answer was becoming familiar.
Everything ugly somehow moved one level higher.
Olivia.
But Vanessa had still provided access.
Still cut Lily’s hair.
Still accepted payments.
I didn’t let the existence of a larger manipulator make my sister smaller than her own choices.
I removed the hard drive and connected it to an old offline laptop Diane kept in a closet.
Most folders appeared empty.
Then I enabled hidden-file viewing.
A directory surfaced.
.NF_ADMIN.
Vanessa whispered, “That’s it.”
I opened it.
Hundreds of files.
Not four.
Not thirty.
Hundreds.
Folders organized by child initials.
Dates.
Scenario codes.
Payment levels.
My chest tightened.
L.C. was Lily.
But she was not the only child.
I didn’t open the others.
I didn’t need to.
Knowing they existed was enough.
This was not a family channel that had gone wrong.
It was a system.
I opened Lily’s folder.
Yellow Hat Episodes 1–4.
Drafts.
Outtakes.
Private-request logs.
Then another folder.
FUTURE.
Inside were planned scenarios that had not happened yet.
BREAK TROPHY.
BIRTHDAY CAKE FAILURE.
LOCKOUT PRANK.
DAD REACTION 2.
My hands shook.
They had planned future humiliations.
One file had tomorrow’s date.
HAIR AFTERMATH — DAD EXPLOSION FOLLOW-UP.
Vanessa sat down.
“I never agreed to that.”
“You agreed to enough.”
“I know.”
I opened a spreadsheet.
Each scenario had a value.
Viewer request price.
Platform cut.
Northline cut.
Vanessa share.
Consultant share.
Consultant.
That column interested me.
The consultant initials changed between episodes.
Episode 1: B.E.
Brooke Ellis.
Episode 2: B.E.
Episode 3: D.C.
My mother?
Episode 4: O.M.
Olivia Mercer.
I turned toward Diane.
“Why are your initials on Episode 3?”
Her face went blank.
“What episode?”
“The stuffed rabbit.”
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa looked at the spreadsheet.
Then at Diane.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“You suggested hiding the rabbit.”
Diane frowned.
“I told you Lily needed to stop depending on one toy.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You said taking it away for a week might help.”
“I meant as parenting advice.”
“You told Olivia too.”
“I did not.”
“You were on the video call.”
Diane’s face changed.
Memory arriving.
Maybe guilt.
Maybe fear.
“I thought it was a family discussion.”
“You gave her the idea.”
“I didn’t tell anyone to livestream it.”
There it was.
Another layer of plausible deniability.
Normal advice repackaged into paid cruelty.
Then I found a column labeled SOURCE MATERIAL.
Episode 3 contained an audio-file link.
I opened it.
Diane’s voice.
“Sometimes Lily gets too attached. If I were Daniel, I’d put that rabbit away for a few days.”
Then Olivia’s voice.
“That could perform.”
Diane laughed.
“What does that mean?”
The recording ended.
My mother stared at the floor.
She hadn’t understood.
But Olivia had.
She was mining ordinary family conversations for punishments.
Then I saw another directory.
DANIEL CUSTODY PACKAGE.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I opened it.
The first file was the clip of me slapping her.
The second was a draft statement from Brooke.
The third was a document titled:
EMERGENCY CARE PETITION — READY AFTER INCIDENT FIVE.
Four yellow-hat episodes.
One violent reaction from me.
Incident Five wasn’t Lily’s haircut.
It was me.

I had become part of their content plan exactly as designed.
