Chapter 5 - GRANDMA HAD BEEN WATCHING

I called Diane.

She answered on the second ring.

“Daniel?”

“Have you spoken to Vanessa?”

Silence.

Too long.

“Mom?”

“She called.”

“When?”

“A few minutes ago.”

“What did she tell you?”

“That you hit her.”

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting at my kitchen table, slowly running her fingers over the edge of the yellow hat.

“What else?”

“That you shaved her hair.”

“Did she tell you why?”

“She said you lost control.”

I laughed once.

There was nothing funny in it.

“Open the full video.”

Diane went quiet.

“What video?”

“The livestream.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Then why are you listed on her Family Safety Archive?”

Silence again.

This one felt different.

“Mom.”

“I told Vanessa to document problems.”

My chest tightened.

“What problems?”

“You’ve been under pressure.”

“So you helped her record me?”

“Not secretly.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t need to.”

I stood.

“You’ve been watching Lily too.”

“No.”

“Your account accessed the archive.”

“I only opened things Vanessa sent.”

“How many?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try.”

Diane exhaled.

“Several.”

“Did you watch the yellow-hat videos?”

“What yellow-hat videos?”

I listened carefully.

She sounded genuinely confused.

That mattered.

Either she was an excellent liar or Vanessa had separated the abuse content from the material she shared with Diane.

“Mom, Vanessa has been livestreaming punishments involving Lily.”

No response.

“She destroyed her shoes for viewers.”

“Daniel—”

“She made Lily tear up a drawing.”

“Stop.”

“She hid her stuffed rabbit because strangers voted for it.”

“Stop.”

“And today she cut off Lily’s braid on camera.”

My mother inhaled sharply.

“She what?”

I looked at Lily’s uneven hair.

“There’s blood above her ear.”

Diane’s voice changed.

“Is Lily okay?”

“She’s frightened.”

“Put her on.”

“No.”

“Daniel.”

“Not until I understand what you helped Vanessa build.”

“I didn’t know about that.”

“Then why did you encourage her to document me?”

“Because she told me you were becoming unpredictable.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

Before the yellow-hat episodes.

“How many months?”

“Four. Maybe five.”

I sat down.

Vanessa had begun laying groundwork long before the livestream channel escalated.

“What did she tell you?”

“That you were yelling more.”

“I yell sometimes.”

“That Lily was scared.”

I looked at my daughter.

“Did you ever ask Lily?”

Silence.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Vanessa said questioning her would confuse her.”

The manipulation was almost elegant.

Vanessa told Diane I was unstable.

Then told Diane not to verify it with Lily.

Then collected carefully edited proof.

“And you believed her.”

“She’s your sister.”

“So am I.”

“You’re my son.”

“Then why didn’t you ask me?”

“You get defensive.”

I almost snapped back.

Instead, I stopped.

That was exactly the response Vanessa’s archive was built around.

I lowered my voice.

“Mom, I’m going to send you the complete livestream.”

“Okay.”

“Watch all of it.”

“I will.”

“And do not contact Vanessa until you finish.”

Diane hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because she is deleting things.”

That got her attention.

“How do you know?”

“The tablet has missing folders.”

I had noticed them while we spoke.

Episode 4 was still there.

Episodes 1 through 3 remained.

But the DAD folder was changing.

Files were disappearing one by one despite airplane mode.

Which meant the tablet had synchronized a deletion queue before I disconnected it.

I started making local screen recordings faster.

Then Lily whispered, “Dad.”

I turned.

She was pointing at a small icon I had overlooked.

A voice memo application.

One recording was titled:

PRACTICE WITH LILY.

I opened it.

Vanessa’s voice.

“Again.”

Then Lily.

“I cut my hair because I was playing with scissors.”

Vanessa corrected her.

“Don’t sound like you’re crying.”

Lily repeated it.

“I cut my hair because I was playing with scissors.”

“Again.”

The recording ran for eleven minutes.

Vanessa was training my five-year-old daughter to lie before the haircut livestream ever started.

At the end, another voice entered the room.

A woman.

“Make sure she says Daniel knew she liked playing with scissors.”

I froze.

The voice wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Diane either.

Lily looked at me.

“I know her.”

My heart began pounding.

“Who?”

Lily whispered the name.

“Miss Brooke.”
