Chapter 4 - DAD_LOSES_CONTROL_FINAL

I opened the newest clip.

It started half a second before my hand struck Vanessa.

Nothing before that.

No Lily removing the yellow hat.

No severed braid.

No blood.

No Vanessa claiming Lily had cut her own hair.

Just me hitting my sister.

Then the clip jumped.

I had the electric clippers in my hand.

Vanessa screamed.

The video ended.

Nine seconds.

Perfectly edited.

Perfectly damning.

I checked the creation time.

4:21 p.m.

The full confrontation had happened at 4:18.

Vanessa had already created the edit before I locked us inside the bedroom.

She hadn’t been standing outside the door in shock.

She had been working.

I opened the file information.

One copy had already uploaded.

Destination:

FAMILY SAFETY ARCHIVE.

I had never heard of it.

There was a shared folder connected to the tablet.

I clicked.

Access denied.

Password required.

I tried Vanessa’s birthday.

Wrong.

Our mother’s birthday.

Wrong.

Then Lily spoke.

“Try yellowfive.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Aunt Vanessa says it when she types.”

I entered YELLOW5.

The folder opened.

My heart started pounding.

Inside were organized subfolders.

DANIEL — ANGER.

LILY — BEHAVIOR.

VANESSA — INJURIES.

HOME CONDITIONS.

SCHOOL CONCERNS.

This wasn’t an influencer archive.

It looked like evidence.

Manufactured evidence.

I opened VANESSA — INJURIES.

Most files were photos of ordinary bruises.

One image showed a mark on her forearm.

Caption:

Daniel grabbed me during argument.

I remembered that bruise.

Vanessa got it moving furniture.

I had helped carry the dresser that caused it.

Another photograph showed a scratch near her wrist.

Caption:

Daniel became aggressive in front of Lily.

False.

I opened SCHOOL CONCERNS.

There were screenshots of messages Vanessa had drafted but never sent.

Daniel forgets pickup times.

Daniel becomes angry when Lily struggles.

Daniel refuses help.

Each sentence was either exaggerated or invented.

Then I found a PDF.

TEMPORARY CARE PLAN.

My name appeared at the top.

Daniel Carter.

Parent displaying escalating instability.

Recommended temporary caregiver:

Vanessa Carter.

I stopped breathing.

She wasn’t merely collecting embarrassing footage.

She was building a story.

A story where I was dangerous.

A story where she was the reasonable aunt protecting Lily.

A story that could explain why Lily should spend more time with her.

I looked toward the bedroom door.

“Vanessa?”

No answer.

I opened it.

The hallway was empty.

I ran downstairs.

Front door open.

Her purse gone.

Car gone.

She had left.

I checked the beauty table.

The scissors were gone too.

The severed pieces of Lily’s hair that had fallen around the chair were gone.

But she had forgotten the braid because I was holding it.

I placed the clear plastic bag inside a locked drawer.

Then I returned to the tablet.

A notification appeared despite airplane mode because it had briefly synchronized before I disconnected it.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

DAD_LOSES_CONTROL_FINAL had been shared with three accounts.

One belonged to Vanessa.

One was unfamiliar.

The third made my blood run cold.

DIANE CARTER.

Our mother.

Lily’s grandmother.

I stared at the name.

Vanessa had not been collecting these videos alone.

My mother had access to the archive.

And according to the account history, she had opened the file two minutes after Vanessa uploaded it.
