Chapter 13 - BROOKE’S PRICE FOR THE ORIGINAL

Brooke finally answered at 7:14 the next morning.
I didn’t accuse her.
I simply said, “I know about the contract.”
Silence.
Then, “Which contract?”
“The one you witnessed.”
Another silence.
“Daniel—”
“Do not lie to me.”
She started crying.
That didn’t move me.
I had spent too many hours listening to adults cry after they were caught while Lily had cried before anyone believed her.
“I didn’t know what Olivia was doing.”
“You witnessed my signature.”
“I thought Vanessa had permission.”
“You saw someone else sign my name.”
“No.”
“Then who signed it?”
Brooke breathed unevenly.
“It was already signed.”
That was possible.
“What exactly did you witness?”
“Vanessa signed a statement that she saw you sign.”
My stomach turned.
“And you signed beneath her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Olivia said it was administrative.”
“You’re a teacher.”
“I know.”
“You work with children.”
“I know.”
“You helped create paperwork that let my sister secretly film mine.”
“I didn’t know about the punishments.”
“That doesn’t answer why you signed.”
Brooke went quiet.
Then she said, “I owed Vanessa money.”
“I know about the $8,500.”
Her breath caught.
“You found that?”
“I found a lot.”
“She helped me when my husband left.”
That was explanation.
Not excuse.
“Where is the original contract?”
“I have it.”
“Why?”
“Because I got scared.”
“When?”
“After the first yellow-hat video.”
“You saw it?”
“Olivia showed me.”
“Why?”
“She wanted me to write that Lily had behavioral issues.”
“And did you?”
“No.”
I remembered the draft statements.
“Not officially.”
“No.”
“What do you want?”
Brooke hesitated.
“I need protection.”
“From whom?”
“Olivia.”
“What has she threatened?”
“My job. The loan. Messages.”
“Then preserve them.”
“She has things that make me look involved.”
“You are involved.”
Brooke started crying harder.
“I know.”
I closed my eyes.
At least somebody was saying it without qualification.
“Bring the contract.”
“Not to your house.”
“Fine.”
“Diane’s either.”
“Fine.”
“Vanessa can’t be there.”
Vanessa was standing five feet away listening.
Her jaw tightened.
“Fine.”
Brooke gave me a location.
A small public parking lot near the preschool.
I left Lily with Diane.
That decision hurt.
My trust in my mother was damaged.
But I believed she would physically protect Lily now that she understood what Vanessa and Olivia had created.
Vanessa remained at Diane’s house.
I drove alone.
Brooke was already there.
She wore sunglasses despite the cloudy morning.
She handed me a sealed envelope through the passenger window.
“Everything I have is in there.”
I didn’t open it yet.
“Who is R?”
Her face changed.
“You know about R?”
“Yes.”
“Then this is worse than I thought.”
“Who?”
Brooke looked toward the lot entrance.
“Rachel Mercer.”
“Olivia’s sister?”
Brooke shook her head.
“Half-sister.”
“Why does she matter?”
“She helped build Northline.”
My pulse changed.
“And she called me?”
“I don’t know.”
“Is she trying to stop Olivia?”
“Sometimes.”
That was not reassuring.
“Sometimes?”
“Rachel thinks Olivia crossed a line.”
“Which line?”
Brooke laughed bitterly.
“Apparently not exploiting children.”
“What then?”
“The insurance policy.”
I stared at her.
Brooke continued.
“Rachel designed the content system. She created the private-request model.”
My stomach turned.
So R was not an innocent whistleblower.
She was another architect who had developed limits only after the operation became dangerous to me.
“Why should I trust anything Rachel says?”
“You shouldn’t.”
At least Brooke understood that.
I opened the envelope.
The original Northline contract was inside.
My forged electronic signature.
Vanessa’s witness declaration.
Brooke’s witness signature.
And an attached handwritten sheet Olivia had apparently forgotten to remove.
PROJECT LILY — CONVERSION PLAN.
Stage 1: trust.
Stage 2: humiliation.
Stage 3: father instability.
Stage 4: caregiver transition.
Stage 5: permanent audience retention.
I felt physically ill.
This wasn’t content.
It was a planned transformation of Lily’s life.
I looked lower.
Target caregiver:
Vanessa Carter.
Backup caregiver:
Diane Carter.
Then another line.
Contingency caregiver:
Rachel Mercer.
I looked at Brooke.
“Why would Olivia’s half-sister become Lily’s caregiver?”
Brooke whispered, “Because Northline’s real contract gives the company control over Lily’s content if the legal caregiver is connected to the business.”
My blood ran cold.
Olivia wasn’t only trying to remove Lily from me.
She had created multiple paths to keep control of my daughter after I was gone.
Then Brooke looked past me.
Her face drained.
A dark SUV had entered the parking lot.
The same kind Vanessa had seen outside my house.
Brooke stepped backward.
“That’s Olivia.”

The SUV accelerated toward us.
