Chapter 10 - INCIDENT FIVE

The petition had been drafted six days earlier.
Before Lily’s haircut.
Before I slapped Vanessa.
Before Vanessa’s hair was touched.
The document described an “anticipated escalation.”
That phrase stayed with me.
Anticipated.
They expected me to react.
The petition claimed Vanessa had repeatedly witnessed me lose control.
It included photographs.
Edited videos.
Statements.
It named Lily as emotionally fearful.
It described Vanessa as the stable relative prepared to provide temporary care.
Then there was an empty evidence box.
INCIDENT FIVE — VIDEO PENDING.
They had been waiting for tonight.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?”
She was crying now.
“I knew Olivia wanted footage.”
“Of me?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She said you were easy to provoke.”
Diane closed her eyes.
I felt something ugly move through me.
I wanted to yell.
Instead I kept my voice quiet.
“What was supposed to happen tonight?”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“The haircut.”
“And?”
“You were supposed to see it.”
“And?”
“She thought you’d scream.”
“Olivia?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Did she tell you to make Lily bleed?”
“No.”
“Did she tell you to cut her hair?”
“Yes.”
“Did she tell you to keep going after Lily asked you to stop?”
Vanessa looked away.
“That was me.”
For the first time, she didn’t hide behind anyone else.
I appreciated the truth.
It didn’t make it smaller.
“Why?”
“The comments were paying.”
I stared at her.
“That’s your answer?”
“I don’t have a better one.”
Neither did I.
I looked at Lily.
She had fallen asleep against Diane’s sofa, yellow hat beside her.
Five years old.
Exhausted by adults.
I returned to the petition.
It included an attachment schedule.
School statement — Brooke Ellis.
Relative statement — Diane Carter.
Video evidence — Vanessa Carter.
Financial support plan — Northline Family Media.
Everyone around Lily had been positioned like pieces on a board.
Some knowingly.
Some not.
Olivia had built a custody narrative using real relationships.
That was what made it dangerous.
The lies sat between truths.
Yes, I had gotten angry.
Yes, I had hit Vanessa.
Yes, Lily had become anxious.
Yes, Diane had worried about me.
Each true fact had been arranged to hide the cause.
I checked the document properties.
Author:
Olivia Mercer.

3:41 p.m. today.
Thirty-seven minutes before the haircut.
Then I found comments embedded inside the draft.
OM: Need visible injury on Vanessa if possible.
My stomach turned.
Another comment.
OM: Child should witness father’s escalation.
Another.
OM: Once Daniel reacts, lock the narrative before he sees full stream.
I looked at Vanessa.
“She wanted me to hit you.”
Vanessa whispered, “Yes.”
“And you still did it.”
“I thought you’d just yell.”
“You gambled with my daughter.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying you know.”
My voice rose.
Lily stirred.
I stopped instantly.
That was the moment I understood how carefully Olivia had studied me.
My love for Lily was my strongest instinct.
She had turned it into my weakest point.
I reopened the administrator archive.
Several folders had corrupted during the remote deletion attempt.
One remained partly recoverable.
OM_PRIVATE.
Vanessa leaned forward.
“I’ve never seen that.”
I opened it.
Password protected.
Diane tried combinations she knew.
Nothing.
Vanessa tried Olivia’s company password.
Nothing.
Then I noticed a security hint.
BROOKE KNOWS THE DATE.
Brooke.
The preschool teacher.
I checked the messages.
There was one date Vanessa and Brooke referenced repeatedly.
March 18.
No explanation.
I entered 0318.
The folder opened.
Inside were contracts, private-request lists, and a separate set of payment records.
Then one scanned document stopped me.
It was a life-insurance policy.

Policy amount:
