Chapter 6 - MISS BROOKE’S VOICE

I replayed the voice memo three times.

The voice sounded like Brooke Ellis.

Lily’s preschool teacher.

But I refused to decide based on Lily’s recognition alone.

Children can confuse voices.

Adults can too.

I needed evidence.

“Did Miss Brooke come here?”

Lily nodded.

“When?”

“Aunt Vanessa picked me up early.”

“What day?”

“The day with pizza at school.”

Friday.

Four days earlier.

I remembered Vanessa texting that afternoon saying Lily felt tired and she would collect her early.

I had thanked her.

That memory made me feel sick now.

“Did Miss Brooke come inside the house?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“They talked.”

“About you?”

Lily shrugged.

“I colored.”

“What did they say?”

“I don’t know.”

Fair answer.

I stopped questioning her.

She was five, not an investigator.

I checked the voice memo information.

Recorded Friday at 2:37 p.m.

The audio contained a notification near the beginning.

A calendar alert.

Vanessa said, “Brooke’s here.”

That made the identification stronger.

I searched the tablet for Brooke.

Thirty-eight results.

Most were messages.

Vanessa: Daniel still thinks Lily’s stomachaches are school anxiety.

Brooke: Good.

My hands went cold.

Another.

Brooke: She asked whether being proud is bad again today.

Vanessa: What did you tell her?

Brooke: That sometimes people brag without realizing it.

I felt anger rise.

They were reinforcing the same message.

Teaching Lily that confidence was wrongdoing.

I kept scrolling.

Three weeks earlier:

Vanessa: Need something documented from school.

Brooke: Like what?

Vanessa: Separation trouble. Fear around pickup. Anything showing emotional instability.

Brooke: Hers or Daniel’s?

Vanessa: Both if possible.

I stopped.

This was no longer only about livestream money.

Vanessa was building a record across different parts of Lily’s life.

Home.

School.

Video.

Audio.

Witness statements.

Why?

I opened the temporary-care PDF again.

Recommended temporary caregiver: Vanessa Carter.

Then another message appeared.

Brooke: I’m not lying in writing.

Vanessa: You said you wanted your loan repaid.

Brooke: That doesn’t mean I’m risking my job.

Vanessa: Then say what’s true and let me interpret it.

Money.

Vanessa had financial leverage over Lily’s teacher.

I searched “loan.”

A screenshot appeared.

$8,500 transfer.

Vanessa Carter to Brooke Ellis.

Memo: PERSONAL.

Another transfer.

$2,000.

I felt the story widening again.

Was Brooke helping because she owed Vanessa money?

Or had Vanessa paid her specifically to manipulate records?

I called the preschool office.

No answer.

It was after hours.

I emailed myself every screenshot.

Then I found a PDF labeled CONSENT.

It carried my electronic signature.

I had never seen it.

The form authorized Lily to participate in “privately produced developmental media sessions” facilitated by Vanessa Carter.

Purpose:

Confidence training.

Behavioral documentation.

Educational media.

The signature looked legitimate.

Too legitimate.

I checked the signing information.

The authorization had been sent to my email address.

Opened from my home IP address.

Signed using a verification code sent to my phone.

That seemed impossible.

Then I remembered something.

Five months earlier, Vanessa had borrowed my phone while helping set up Lily’s school photo account.

She had been sitting beside me for nearly twenty minutes.

Had she intercepted the verification code then?

I opened the metadata.

Signature date:

That exact evening.

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa had prepared the foundation for this before the first livestream.

The consent was submitted to a small media company.

Northline Family Media LLC.

I had never heard of it.

A payment schedule was attached.

Talent name:

Lily Carter.

Guardian representative:

Vanessa Carter.

Projected annual earnings:

$96,000.

My five-year-old daughter had been turned into a paid performer without my knowledge.

And when I opened the ownership page for Northline Family Media, I found that Vanessa didn’t own it.

Somebody named Olivia Mercer did.

The same surname appeared in Brooke Ellis’s emergency-contact file from the school directory.
