Chapter 14 - THE PAGE OLIVIA WANTED BACK

I didn’t wait to see what Olivia intended.
I locked the doors and started the engine.
Brooke ran toward her own car.
The SUV stopped sideways behind me.
Driver’s door opened.
A woman stepped out.
I recognized Olivia from Northline’s company photo.
Early forties.
Dark coat.
Phone in one hand.
No weapon.
No dramatic threat.
Just furious purpose.
She walked straight toward my passenger door and slapped her palm against the glass.
“Daniel.”
I backed out through the open side of the parking space.
She moved with the car.
“Give me the envelope.”
I kept the window closed.
“You forged my signature.”
She laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because she thought I understood less than I did.
“You don’t know what Vanessa signed.”
“I have the original.”
Her face changed.
There.
That mattered.
I drove away.
She did not follow immediately.
I watched the rearview mirror until the lot disappeared.
Then I pulled into a busy gas station and opened the envelope again.
Why had Olivia wanted it badly enough to appear in person?
The contract was damaging.
But I already had copies of similar documents.
There had to be something else.
I counted the pages.
Twenty-three.
Page twenty-two was different.
Thin paper.
Handwritten notes.
Not part of the contract.
Brooke had included it accidentally or deliberately.
At the top:
CAREGIVER LEVERAGE.
Three names.
Vanessa Carter.
Debt exposure.
Diane Carter.
Family guilt / document access.
Brooke Ellis.
Debt / employment exposure.
Olivia had written weaknesses beside every person.
Not colleagues.
Tools.
Then there was my name.
Daniel Carter.
Leverage:
Lily.
I stared at that single word.
That was the entire strategy.
No debt.
No secret.
No financial weakness.
My daughter.
Beneath it:
Predictable protective aggression.
High value if provoked on camera.
I felt ashamed all over again.
She had predicted me accurately.
Not because I was violent by nature.
Because she knew I would react when Lily was harmed.
And I had.
Then I found the final name.
Rachel Mercer.
Leverage:
Guilt regarding Cedar House.
Cedar House.
I had never heard of it.
I called Brooke.
She answered immediately.
“What is Cedar House?”
Silence.
“Brooke.”
“I don’t know much.”
“What do you know?”
“It was before Lily.”
“That tells me nothing.”
“Olivia and Rachel ran another media project.”
“With children?”
“Yes.”
My stomach turned.
“How many?”
“I don’t know.”
“What happened?”
“One family sued.”
“For what?”
“Humiliation content. Fake punishments. Staged family fights.”
The system had existed before Vanessa.
Before Lily.
Northline was not an experiment.
It was a refined version.
“Why did it stop?”
Brooke hesitated.
“A child got hurt.”
My grip tightened.
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“Was Olivia involved?”
“Yes.”
“Rachel?”
“Yes.”
“Did anybody report it?”
“The family settled privately.”
Of course.
Money.
Silence.
Rebranding.
Northline.
My phone beeped.
Incoming message from Diane.
COME HOME NOW.
I called immediately.
“What happened?”
Diane’s voice trembled.
“Olivia is here.”
I accelerated.
“Is Lily safe?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Upstairs with Vanessa.”
That sentence would have terrified me yesterday.
Now it terrified me differently.
“Lock the bedroom door.”
“We did.”
“What does Olivia want?”
“The tablet.”
“Don’t give it to her.”
“She says it belongs to Northline.”
“I don’t care.”
Diane lowered her voice.
“She brought Rachel.”
I froze.
Rachel Mercer.
The person who called me.
The co-creator.
The contingency caregiver.
The woman who apparently regretted the insurance policy but helped build everything else.
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
I drove faster but stayed within control.
No crash was going to help Lily.
When I reached Diane’s street, Olivia’s SUV was outside.
Another car sat behind it.
I parked across the road.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Rachel.
I answered.
“Don’t come inside yet.”
“You’re in my mother’s house.”
“I know.”
“Get out.”
“Olivia brought something you need to see.”
“What?”
“The Cedar House archive.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Why?”
“Because she thinks it will scare Vanessa into giving the tablet back.”
“And will it?”
“Yes.”
“What is in it?”
Rachel went silent.
Then she said, “Proof Vanessa knew about Northline before she ever told you she did.”
I stared at Diane’s house.
“What are you talking about?”
“Vanessa wasn’t recruited nine months ago.”
My stomach dropped.
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
“That’s impossible. Lily was two.”
Rachel whispered, “Exactly.”
The front door opened.
Vanessa stepped onto the porch holding the tablet.
Olivia stood behind her.
