Chapter 11 - THE POLICY IN MY NAME

I stared at the policy until the words stopped making sense.

“This isn’t possible.”

Vanessa read over my shoulder.

Her face drained.

“I didn’t know about this.”

Diane whispered, “Neither did I.”

I believed both of them.

Not because I trusted them.

Because their fear looked different now.

The policy was no longer about content.

It was about my life.

I opened the application.

My date of birth.

My address.

My employer.

My income.

All accurate.

My signature.

False.

The medical declaration claimed I had no major health conditions.

That was true.

But I had never completed the form.

A recorded verification call was listed.

I clicked the audio.

A man answered questions in my name.

His voice was distorted by poor compression, but it was not mine.

He knew my personal information.

Last four digits of my Social Security number.

Mortgage lender.

Primary-care clinic.

Mother’s maiden name.

I turned toward Diane.

“Who had access to Dad’s storage records?”

She looked sick.

“Vanessa.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never took Daniel’s Social Security card.”

“You didn’t need to.”

I pointed toward the tablet.

“Somebody had scans.”

Vanessa whispered, “Olivia.”

Probably.

But how had Olivia obtained them?

I checked the scanned identity documents attached to the policy.

My driver’s license.

Old copy.

Expiration date from three years earlier.

That copy could only have come from one place I knew.

The family emergency binder Diane kept after my father died.

“Mom.”

She covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.”

“You gave Olivia the binder?”

“No. Vanessa borrowed it.”

Vanessa stood.

“For Lily’s school registration.”

“Did Olivia have it?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“One night.”

One night was enough.

I wanted to smash something.

Instead I took photographs.

The policy premium payments were made by Northline.

Why would a media company pay to insure me?

I opened the ownership justification.

Key-person coverage.

It claimed my involvement was essential to a family-media project.

Completely false.

Then I saw an amendment request submitted two weeks ago.

Change of beneficiary pending.

The new beneficiary field had been left blank in the stored copy.

But a note from Olivia said:

Move once custody packet is active.

Move to whom?

I searched the private folder.

One spreadsheet contained a projected revenue model.

Lily content.

Caregiver content.

Family-transition content.

Then a line:

POST-DANIEL VALUE.

My stomach turned.

Vanessa stepped away from the computer.

“No.”

I opened it.

The projection estimated higher revenue if Lily’s family circumstances changed dramatically.

Grief-related content.

Relocation.

Caregiver adjustment.

Inheritance conflict.

Diane began crying.

“This woman is sick.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“You worked for her.”

“I didn’t know this.”

“You brought her into our family.”

“I know.”

“Did she ever talk about me dying?”

“No.”

“Think.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“There was one joke.”

“What joke?”

“She said your channel would explode if something happened to you.”

My blood ran cold.

“When?”

“What exactly did she say?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“She said, ‘People love a tragedy when the child is photogenic.’”

The room went silent.

Diane sat down.

I checked the administrator logs.

Olivia had accessed the policy file three days earlier.

She had also opened another file.

DANIEL — ROUTINE.

I clicked.

My work schedule.

Gym days.

The route I drove to Lily’s preschool.

Places I stopped for coffee.

Home arrival patterns.

I felt watched in retrospect.

Then I found a map.

One location was circled.

A construction site I visited every Tuesday morning.

Beside it:

NO CAMERAS ON WEST ENTRY.

My body went cold.

This had moved beyond reputation.

Beyond custody.

Beyond money.
