Chapter 1 - The Padlocked Garage

The freezing Christmas Eve wind howled across driveway. Snowflakes danced wildly beneath bright yellow porch lights. I sprinted frantically toward the dark suburban garage. My heart pounded violently against my aching ribs. I heard faint muffled gasps behind metal door. My sister Emma was trapped in dark cold. I reached out and grabbed heavy garage handle. I violently yanked the metal handle up high. A thick steel padlock stopped movement instantly today. Heavy iron chains rattled loudly against painted wood. Desperate panic flooded through my entire trembling body. I slammed both fists against cold metal door. "Emma, can you hear my loud voice inside?" Only silence answered back from dark cold garage. Heavy footsteps crunched loudly on snowy driveway behind. My stepfather Robert stepped into bright yellow light. He wore a warm thick flannel shirt tonight. His face was completely granite cold without pity. Robert reached out his heavy hand with force. He grabbed my arm, pulling me back hard. "She needs to learn her lesson tonight, Ethan." His cruel words cut deeper than freezing wind. Pure maternal and brotherly protective rage consumed me. My sister was freezing to death inside garage. Robert wanted to break her sweet innocent spirit. He wanted total control over her life savings. I violently jerked my arm free from grip. Robert stumbled backward onto snow-covered driveway pavement today. I reached into my gray flannel shirt pocket. My fingers gripped my sleek smart mobile phone. I quickly dialed three emergency numbers with thumb. I brought the phone up to my ear. I pounded my fist on garage door again. "My sister is locked inside this freezing garage!" "Send emergency police and paramedics right now, please!" The dispatcher confirmed location and sent help fast. Robert glared at me with pure venomous anger. "You just ruined your entire future tonight, boy." "I control every single dollar in this house." "She disrespected my authority during family holiday dinner." "She refused to sign the trust legal waiver." "So she stays in cold until she learns." I looked at Robert with absolute cold hatred. He was a monster hiding behind holiday cheer. He locked my sister in sub-zero winter temperatures. Frost was forming along bottom of garage door. Emma had asthma and weak lungs since childhood. She could not survive hours in freezing cold. I pressed my ear against cold metal panel. I heard a tiny, weak gasp of breath. "Ethan... it is so cold in here..." Her faint voice broke my heart into pieces. "I am right here, Emma!" I shouted. In far distance, sirens began wailing loudly. Red and blue lights flashed across dark trees. Help was finally arriving on snowy Elm Street. Robert's hand reached toward his heavy coat pocket. A small brass key glinted in his palm. Suddenly, the faint groaning behind door stopped completely.
