Chapter 6 - Detective Miller Arrives
Detective Miller tapped the glass screen of tablet. The bright LED display lit up with data. A high-definition security application loaded on screen. "We recovered deleted cloud files," Detective Miller announced. Robert's face went slightly pale around his mouth. Attorney Vance quickly stepped between Robert and detective. "Detective, those files were retrieved without search warrant!" "Any evidence on that device is legally inadmissible!" Detective Miller pulled a white paper from coat. "This is an emergency search warrant signed by Judge." "Exigent circumstances involving child and adult endangerment." "Your motion to suppress is denied, Vance." Attorney Vance's jaw tightened in silent frustration. Detective Miller turned the tablet screen toward Robert. The video thumbnail showed tonight's exact date stamp. The time was eight fifteen PM on Christmas Eve. The video feed showed the interior of garage. On screen, Robert walked into garage with Emma. Emma was arguing with him, holding paper folder. Robert suddenly struck Emma across face with fist. Emma fell hard onto cold concrete floor surface. Her head hit the metal tool chest shelf. Robert stood over her unconscious body on floor. He pulled her torn winter coat over shoulders. He walked out garage door and closed lids. He placed heavy iron padlock on outer latch. He slid the metal locking pin into place. Then he pulled out his smart mobile phone. He opened the security camera app on phone. He sat in his warm living room chair. He watched her shivering on screen for hours. Audio from tablet played clearly in lobby room: "She will freeze in four hours," Robert said. "No one will find her until Christmas morning." The horrific words echoed across silent hospital lobby. Hospital staff and visitors froze in utter horror. They stared at Robert with pure disgust and shock. Robert's hands began trembling inside his coat pockets. His cold arrogance completely shattered into pieces now. He looked at Attorney Vance for legal help. Attorney Vance took a full step away from Robert. Even the greedy attorney was stunned by video. "I... I didn't know about video," Vance stammered. Detective Miller looked at Robert with cold steel.
