Chapter 9 - The Lawyer's Intervention

Emma was sitting up in hospital bed warmly. A thick fleece blanket was wrapped around shoulders. Color had returned to her sweet, brave cheeks. I walked over and sat on edge bed. I pulled my sister into a tight, warm hug. We wept tears of relief together in quiet room. "It is over, Emma," I whispered softly. "Robert is in handcuffs, police have all files." Emma squeezed my hand with surprising physical strength. "Ethan, there is something else you need know." Her voice was serious, quiet, and filled sadness. "What is it, Emma?" I asked softly. Emma reached under her pillow, pulling paper out. "I found Mom's real medical report in safe." "The report Robert hid from us three years ago." My chest tightened with sudden, heavy emotional dread. Three years ago, Mom died of sudden heart attack. At least, that was what Robert told us then. We were too heartbroken to question his words. Emma unfolded the yellowed medical report page carefully. "Mom didn't die of natural causes, Ethan." "The toxicology report showed high levels arsenic poison." "Robert was poisoning her tea for six months." A cold, icy wave terror washed over me. My entire body went numb with deep shock. Our mother was murdered by the man she trusted. Robert killed her to gain control over estate. He tried to kill Emma for exact same reason. He was a serial killer hiding inside house. I grabbed the paper, reading the doctor's notes. The evidence was documented clearly by lab technicians. Robert had bribed the local county coroner back then. The coroner buried the report in private safe. Emma found it while searching for trust documents. That was why Robert attacked her tonight fast. He wasn't just hiding money from us today. He was hiding a first-degree murder crime scene. I stood up, holding the paper in hand. "I am taking this straight to Detective Miller."
