Chapter 3 - Finding Emma

The small digital screen flickered in garage corner. It was a smart home security display unit. The camera lens pointed directly at Emma's spot. Robert had installed that digital camera last month. He claimed it was for outdoor weather security. In reality, it was a cruel monitoring device. He watched Emma freeze from his warm bedroom. He watched her struggle on his smart phone. My hands shook violently with pure unadulterated fury. I looked from screen to Robert's cold face. "You watched her suffer on your phone!" Robert's posture stiffened slightly at my loud words. His eyes darted nervously toward the mounted tablet. Officer Davis noticed my eyes locked on screen. Davis walked toward the wall unit with interest. "Do not touch my private property!" Robert yelled. "You need a federal warrant to inspect electronics!" Officer Davis ignored Robert's frantic legal threats today. Davis pulled out a clear plastic evidence bag. He carefully unclipped the smart tablet from wall. "This is active crime scene evidence now, sir." Paramedics lifted Emma onto the rolling ambulance stretcher. They strapped her body down securely with blankets. "We are transporting her to St. Jude Hospital!" I stood up from floor, my jeans dirty. I walked toward the back of open ambulance. "I am riding in back with my sister!" Robert tried to step up onto ambulance bumper. He put on a fake caring father face. "I am her legal guardian, I am coming!" I stepped into doorway, blocking his path firmly. "You touch her again, and I kill you." My voice was quiet, dead, and lethal. Robert backed away from my intense dark eyes. The paramedic slammed the rear ambulance doors shut. Sirens wailed as we sped away through snow. Inside ambulance, heart monitors beeped very slowly. Emma's pale fingers twitched gently against my hand. She opened her hazel eyes for brief second. "Ethan... his phone..." Emma whispered through mask. "He has the original financial files on phone." "He stole Mom's estate before locking me." My blood ran colder than the winter air. Robert hadn't just abused her out anger. This was a calculated, planned, greedy robbery.
