Chapter 10 - The Second Recording

I walked out of hospital room into hallway. Detective Miller was finishing paperwork near security desk. I handed him our mother's original toxicology report. Miller read through the medical pages with sharp eyes. His face hardened into dark, lethal, righteous anger. "This changes everything, Ethan," Detective Miller stated. "This is proof of premeditated first-degree murder." "I am requesting an immediate exhumation order tonight." Miller pulled out his phone, calling state prosecutor. "District Attorney Evans, we have new evidence in Whitmore case." "We have certified lab proof of arsenic poisoning." "Issue a warrant for first-degree capital murder immediately." The prosecutor approved the request without delay tonight. Robert was no longer facing just attempted murder. He was facing mandatory life without parole sentence. Or the death penalty under state capital statutes. Inside county jail intake, Robert was being processed. Officers took his belt, shoes, and flannel shirt. Robert sat in holding cell, waiting for bail. He still believed Attorney Vance would post bail soon. Suddenly, cell door opened with heavy iron clatter. Detective Miller walked in, holding new arrest warrant. "Bad news, Robert," Detective Miller said coldly. "Your bail hearing has been canceled permanently tonight." "You are charged with first-degree murder of wife." Robert's face went completely ghostly white once again. He stumbled backward, falling onto cold metal bench. "That... that is impossible!" Robert stammered out. "Her death was ruled natural three years ago!" "Your coroner friend surrendered his files an hour ago," Miller replied. "He confessed to taking two hundred thousand cash bribe." "He is sitting in cell three down hall." Robert's eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror now. His entire web of lies was completely destroyed. Every accomplice he hired had turned against him. He was completely alone in dark cold cell. He fell to knees, sobbing hysterically on floor. The man who locked my sister in cold was now locked away forever.
