Chapter 2 - Breaking the Chains

The sound of wailing sirens echoed down street. Two police cruisers pulled up onto snowy lawn. An emergency medical ambulance stopped right behind them. Red emergency lights illuminated the dark suburban house. Four armed police officers stepped out onto snow. Paramedics grabbed heavy pediatric medical kits from back. Officer Davis marched toward the padlocked garage door. He carried a pair of heavy steel cutters. Robert stepped forward, trying to assert fake authority. "Officer, this is a private family disciplinary matter." "My stepdaughter is simply throwing a minor temper tantrum." Officer Davis shoved Robert aside with firm arm. "Step back right now, sir!" Davis commanded. "We received a high-priority hostage emergency call." Officer Davis positioned heavy cutters on thick chain. He applied full physical strength to handles now. A loud metallic snapping sound rang through air. The heavy iron padlock clattered onto cold concrete. Officer Davis grabbed the garage door handle fast. He yanked the metal door upward with force. The garage door rolled open with heavy screech. Freezing, icy air rushed out into driveway space. Thick white frost covered every surface inside garage. The concrete floor was ice cold underfoot today. I rushed inside without waiting for police command. I fell to my knees on freezing floor. My sister Emma lay curled up in corner. Her face was covered in dark purple bruises. Her winter coat was violently torn at seams. She was shivering uncontrollably on freezing hard ground. Her lips were blue from extreme winter cold. Her eyes were closed, barely responding to sound. "Emma! Open your eyes for me, baby!" I gently wrapped my arms around her waist. Her body felt like a solid block ice. Her breathing was shallow, ragged, and barely present. Paramedics rushed into garage with stretcher unit now. They knelt beside us on freezing cold floor. A female paramedic checked Emma's weak wrist pulse. "Her body temperature is dangerously low!" paramedic shouted. "We need to warm her body up immediately!" They carefully placed an oxygen mask over face. Clear plastic fogged up with her weak breaths. I lifted Emma carefully into my warm arms. Her head rested weakly against my flannel shirt. Robert stood silently near open garage doorway frame. He watched us with cold, detached, callous eyes. He showed zero remorse for his daughter's condition. Then my eyes caught something flashing in corner. A small digital screen was mounted on wall. A tiny green camera light blinked in darkness.
