Chapter 4 - The Hidden Digital Spy

The ambulance sped through dark snowy city streets. Red emergency lights flashed against passing brick buildings. Inside medical unit, paramedics worked frantically on Emma. Warm IV fluids were injected into her arm. Heated blankets were wrapped tightly around her chest. I held her freezing left hand in both. "Stay with me, Emma," I wept softly. "You are safe now, he cannot touch you." Emma nodded weakly beneath her plastic oxygen mask. Her breathing slowly became more regular and steady. She tried to speak again through the mask. "He forged Mom's signature two weeks ago." "He transferred three million dollars to his account." "When I found bank statements, he hit me." "He dragged me into garage and locked padlock." Tears of pure heartbreak streamed down my cheeks. Our sweet mother died three years ago today. She left her entire estate trust to Emma. Robert was only named as temporary estate executor. He was supposed to manage funds until Emma turned thirty. Tomorrow was Emma's thirtieth birthday morning on calendar. If Emma turned thirty, control passed to her. If Emma died before thirty, Robert inherited everything. Robert planned her death on Christmas Eve night. He wanted it to look like accidental freezing. He thought no one would check garage until morning. He didn't expect me to drive down early. I was supposed to arrive tomorrow for lunch. I drove through storm because I felt bad intuition. That gut feeling saved my sister's innocent life. The ambulance pulled up to hospital emergency entrance. Rear doors opened into warm lit bay area. Medical trauma team rushed out with rolling bed. They took Emma's stretcher and ran inside hallways. "Priority one hypothermia patient!" doctor shouted out. I ran alongside rolling bed through double doors. We entered bright white emergency room section fast. Doctors pushed me back from trauma bay curtain. "Wait in lobby area, sir, let us work!" I stood in hallway, breathing heavy with sweat. Footsteps echoed loudly on polished floor behind me. I turned around and saw Robert walking in. He was accompanied by an expensive dressed lawyer. Robert wore a confident, smug grin on face. He held his mobile phone tightly in hand. "You cannot stop the legal transfer, Ethan," Robert chuckled.
