Chapter 1 - The Matching Bruises

The bright fluorescent lights hummed loudly above trauma beds.

Sterile antiseptic smells filled the cold emergency treatment room.

I lay motionlessly on the hard stainless steel gurney.

My dark blue hospital sports bra was soaked in sweat.

Dark purple bruises covered my swollen face and left cheek.

Beside me, my identical twin sister Lily lay shivering softly.

Lily wore a matching purple hospital sports bra and shorts.

Identical dark red marks covered her ribs and pale shoulders.

Her breathing came in shallow, painful, ragged gasps for air.

Our violent stepfather Grant Mercer stood near the sliding doors.

He wore a dark navy polo shirt with rolled sleeves.

His face was flushed with manufactured, fake fatherly concern today.

Our distressed mother Sarah stood terrified right behind his back.

Doctor Elena Ruiz stepped between Grant and our rolling gurneys.

Her crisp white lab coat was spotless under bright lights.

"They tumbled down the steep wooden stairs," Grant lied smoothly.

"They were goofing around and lost their physical balance together."

Doctor Ruiz did not answer his arrogant statement right away.

She slowly pulled down her blue medical examination gloves carefully.

She looked back and forth between Lily's face and mine.

Her sharp eyes examined the exact placement of our injuries.

The dark purple bruises on my jaw matched Lily's jaw.

The deep red hand prints on my ribs matched her.

Two identical girls bore identical physical beatings across their bodies.

Doctor Ruiz's professional expression turned instantly into dark, grave anger.

"A staircase fall never creates identical geometric marks," she stated.

"These severe physical injuries are completely identical in every way."

Grant took a sharp, aggressive step toward the doctor's space.

His heavy fists clenched tightly at his dark polo sides.

"Are you calling me a liar, Doctor?" Grant growled out.

"I am the head of this household!" Grant shouted angrily.

My mother Sarah wrung her hands in total, silent panic.

She refused to meet my swollen, tear-filled hazel eyes today.

She knew Grant had locked us in the dark basement.

She knew he beat us with a heavy leather belt.

Yet she stood there quietly, protecting her abusive new husband.

Doctor Ruiz did not back away from Grant's large frame.

She reached out and pressed the wall security alarm button.

A bright red warning light flashed above the double doors.

The heavy metal treatment room door slid shut automatically now.

The electronic deadbolt lock clicked firmly into the wall frame.

Doctor Ruiz turned toward the hospital security guard standing nearby.

"Call nine one one right now, Marcus," Doctor Ruiz ordered.
