Chapter 7 - The Inheritance Motive

My jaw dropped in sheer, absolute, terrifying shock today.
Ten million dollars left behind by our loving late father.
Lily sat up slightly on her bed, gasping for air.
"Ten million dollars?" Lily whispered through pale lips.
"Grant told us our dad was a broke gambler!"
Detective Thomas nodded solemnly, pointing at the legal papers.
"Grant lied to you girls for seven long years."
"According to the legal execution clause of the trust,"
"If both twins die or are declared mentally incompetent,"
"Full legal control of the ten million passes to stepfather."
Pure, paralyzing, freezing horror washed through my entire soul.
Grant hadn't just abused us out of random temper.
He was systematically breaking our physical and mental health.
He wanted us declared mentally unfit before next week.
Or he wanted to provoke a fatal injury inside house.
So he could inherit the full ten million dollars.
He married our mother Sarah seven years ago for this.
Our mother helped him hide the trust paperwork in safe.
They were planning to commit ultimate murder before next week.
Before our eighteenth birthday unlocked the funds directly to us.
My hands shook violently against the warm wool blanket.
The sheer monstrous depth of their greed was bottomless.
"Where are the trust funds currently held, Detective?"
"The funds are locked in a high-security bank," Thomas.
"Grant tried to submit fake power of attorney papers yesterday."
"The bank flagged the signatures and rejected the request."
"That is why he beat you girls so severely last night."
"He was trying to force you to sign the waiver."
Realization struck my mind like a physical hammer blow.
Yesterday morning, Grant brought a stack of papers down.
He demanded Lily and I sign the financial waivers.
When we refused to sign without reading the text,
He locked us in the dark basement and grabbed belt.
He was running out of time before our birthday date.
