Chapter 5 - The Mother's Betrayal
Grant tried to dodge sideways toward the open doorway exit.
Officer Miller tackled him hard onto the cold tile floor.
Heavy body weight slammed down against the hard floor surface.
Grant groaned in pain as Officer Miller twisted his arms.
Cold steel handcuffs clicked shut around Grant's thick wrists.
The metal ratcheted tight, binding his hands securely behind.
"Get off me! I have rights in this city!" Grant.
"You have the right to remain silent, Mercer," Davis.
They pulled Grant up to his feet by his collar.
His dark polo shirt was torn and covered in dirt.
His arrogant, controlling dominance was completely destroyed in minutes.
Officer Davis turned toward my weeping mother sitting on floor.
He pulled a second pair of steel handcuffs from belt.
"Sarah Mercer, stand up and place hands behind back."
Sarah's eyes bulged in pure, unadulterated, rising panic.
"What? I am their biological mother!" Sarah shrieked out.
"I didn't hit them! I was a victim too!"
I looked down from my gurney at my mother.
"You held the basement door shut, Sarah," I stated.
"You locked us in the dark while he grabbed belt."
"You are just as guilty as he is today."
Officer Davis snapped the steel handcuffs around Sarah's wrists.
My mother wept pathetic, desperate tears on the hospital floor.
"Emma... Lily... please tell the police to stop!"
"I am your mother! I gave you life!"
Lily turned her head away from Sarah's crying face.
She squeezed my fingers tighter, refusing to look at her.
Police officers dragged Grant and Sarah out the double doors.
Their screaming arguments faded down the long hospital hallway.
A massive, heavy weight lifted off my chest instantly.
For three long years, we lived in silent terror.
Now, the monsters who tortured us were in chains.
Doctor Ruiz walked over to our gurneys with blankets.
She gently wrapped warm wool blankets over our shoulders.
"You were incredibly brave today, Emma," Doctor Ruiz said.
"Now let us take proper care of your injuries."
