Chapter 11 - The Cellar Discovery

An hour later, Detective Thomas returned to our room.

He wore a calm, reassuring, victorious smile on face.

"Grant Mercer is in federal custody at hospital prison."

"He will survive his injuries to face trial, girls."

"And your mother Sarah is held without bail in jail."

Lily let out a long, ragged, emotional breath of relief.

Tears of joy flooded her hazel eyes as she smiled.

"Is it really over, Detective?" Lily asked softly.

"Yes, Lily. You two are completely safe now."

Detective Thomas pulled up photos from his police tablet.

The forensic team had searched our suburban house completely.

Behind a false wooden panel in our dark basement floor,

They discovered a hidden, soundproofed windowless room cell.

Heavy iron chains hung from the concrete walls inside.

Empty water bottles and moldy bread crusts lay scattered.

This was where Grant planned to lock us next week.

He built a permanent solitary confinement cell in house.

Where he intended to keep us hidden from the world.

Until our legal rights to the trust were erased.

Doctor Ruiz looked at the terrifying photos with shock.

"He built a prison cell inside a suburban home," Ruiz.

"He is a cold, calculating serial family monster."

Detective Thomas swiped to the next tablet photo screen.

"We also recovered your father's original handwritten will."

"Your father knew Grant was dangerous seven years ago."

"He named an independent trustee to manage your future."

"A trustee who has been searching for you girls years."

My brows pulled together into a deep, curious line.

"Who is the independent trustee, Detective?" I asked.

The door to our trauma room opened gently once again.
