Chapter 2 - The Locked Room

Grant's face flushed a deep, furious crimson red shade.
He lunged violently toward the locked metal treatment room door.
"You cannot keep me trapped in here!" Grant roared loudly.
Security Guard Marcus stepped directly into his path with force.
Marcus planted his broad shoulders against Grant's heavy chest frame.
"Step back right now, sir!" Marcus commanded in a voice.
"You will remain in this room until police officers arrive."
Inside the treatment bay, two trauma nurses moved fast today.
They pulled out high-resolution digital medical camera units quickly.
They began documenting every single bruise covering our young skin.
Bright camera flashes lit up the cold room in rapid succession.
Lily let out a weak, painful sob from her bed.
She clutched her bruised ribs with trembling, pale fingers.
"Emma... it hurts to breathe..." Lily whispered to me.
I reached across the narrow gap between our hospital gurneys.
I grabbed my twin sister's cold hand with all my strength.
"Hold on, Lily," I whispered back through split lips.
"He is never going to lay hands on us again."
My mother Sarah rushed forward, crying fake, pitiful tears now.
"Emma, please tell the doctor the truth!" Sarah begged me.
"Tell them it was just an accidental fall down stairs!"
"If Grant goes to jail, we lose our house!"
I looked at my biological mother with pure, cold disgust.
She cared more about Grant's money than our safety.
She watched him starve us in the dark basement for days.
She watched him strike my sister across her face yesterday.
"Shut your mouth, Sarah," I said in a clear voice.
My mother gasped loudly, backing away toward the wall corner.
Grant thrashed wildly against Security Guard Marcus's firm hold.
"You ungrateful little brats!" Grant shrieked across the room.
"I gave you a roof over your pathetic heads!"
"I paid for your food and your private school clothes!"
"You have no proof I touched either of you today!"
I let out a low, cold, quiet laugh through tears.
Grant thought he had wiped all the home security cameras.
He thought he had destroyed our private mobile phones yesterday.
He completely forgot about my old black school backpack resting below.
My backpack sat on the lower shelf of my gurney.
