Chapter 6 - The Medical Evidence
Doctor Ruiz displayed our full body X-ray images on screen.
The glowing white skeleton images lit up the dark monitor.
She pointed her finger at my twin sister Lily's ribs.
"Look at these secondary bone calluses here, Emma."
"Lily has three fractured ribs that healed incorrectly months ago."
"And your right wrist shows signs of a past fracture."
My stomach churned as I remembered that awful night.
Six months ago, Grant shoved me into the hallway wall.
My wrist snapped against the heavy wooden door frame hard.
Grant refused to take me to an emergency hospital.
He wrapped my arm in a cheap plastic splint instead.
He threatened to break my other arm if I complained.
Doctor Ruiz's eyes burned with quiet, protective, maternal anger.
"This proves a long-standing pattern of severe physical abuse."
"This medical evidence will keep both of them locked away."
A tall man in a dark tailored suit entered.
He carried a leather briefcase and an official badge folder.
It was Detective Thomas from the Special Victims Unit.
Detective Thomas walked straight to our hospital bedsides gently.
"Emma and Lily Carter?" Detective Thomas asked softly.
"Yes, I am Emma, and this is Lily," I.
Detective Thomas set his briefcase onto the tray table.
"We just executed an emergency search warrant on your house."
"We found something hidden inside Grant's private office safe."
He pulled a thick crimson folder from his leather bag.
The crimson folder bore official financial bank seals on front.
"Your late biological father left an estate trust," Thomas.
My heart skipped a beat as I heard those words.
Our biological father died in a car crash seven years ago.
Grant always told us our father left zero money behind.
Grant claimed our father died broke and deeply in debt.
Detective Thomas opened the crimson folder on my bed.
"Your father left a ten-million-dollar inheritance trust fund."
"A trust fund set aside specifically for you two girls."
