Chapter 8 - The Lawyer's Intervention
A tall man in an expensive gray suit stepped inside.
He carried a thick leather legal folder in his hands.
It was Arthur Vance, Grant's high-priced defense attorney.
Two private security guards walked right behind his back.
Arthur Vance wore an arrogant, condescending smirk on face.
"Detective Thomas, stop interviewing these minors immediately!"
Arthur Vance announced in a loud, commanding, authoritative tone.
"I am Attorney Arthur Vance representing Grant Mercer today."
"I have an emergency court injunction signed an hour ago."
"Grant Mercer remains the legal guardian of these girls."
"You have no legal right to question them without."
Doctor Ruiz stepped directly in front of the lawyer fast.
Her white lab coat stood like an unbreakable wall today.
"Get out of my emergency trauma room, Arthur!" Ruiz.
"Your client is currently held in police custody for torture!"
Arthur Vance pulled an official paper document from folder.
He held the paper up for Detective Thomas to inspect.
"The judge granted emergency temporary bail twenty minutes ago."
"Grant Mercer has posted bail and is a free man."
My blood ran completely ice cold in a single second.
Grant was released on bail twenty minutes ago today.
The violent monster who tried to break our bones was free.
Lily let out a terrified shriek, shrinking into her pillow.
"Emma... he's coming back for us!" Lily wept out.
Arthur Vance looked at us with cold, victorious eyes.
"My client is waiting in his car outside hospital."
"He is exercising his legal rights as guardian now."
"He is removing his stepdaughters from this medical facility."
Detective Thomas drew his sidearm with lightning fast speed.
He pointed the heavy black barrel at Arthur Vance's chest.
"Touch those girls, Arthur, and you enter federal custody."
"Your emergency bail order is voided under federal law."
Arthur Vance's arrogant smirk faltered for a fraction second.
"Under what federal law, Detective?" Arthur spat out.
