Chapter 1 - The Rail Broke in My Hand

“You know he cannot fit.”

The words left Elena Vance’s mouth between two controlled breaths.

Another contraction tore through her.

Her fingers clamped around the stainless-steel rail beside the delivery bed.

The metal bent.

One bracket ripped loose with a sharp crack that silenced everyone in the room.

The fetal monitor accelerated.

Elena stared through tear-filled eyes at her husband.

Dr. Preston Pierce stood beside the bed in his white physician’s coat, his dark hair still perfectly combed, his expression colder than the hospital lights.

He had been her husband for seven years.

He was also the obstetrician now refusing to listen to her.

Elena was an emergency physician.

She knew her body.

She had seen the ultrasound measurements.

Their baby was positioned dangerously, and the estimated size made the delivery Preston demanded medically reckless.

Yet he did not look at the monitor.

He looked at Khloe.

The blonde intern stood behind him, gripping his upper arm as if she needed protection from Elena.

Preston reached toward the epidural control line.

The senior delivery nurse stepped between his hand and the switch.

“Turn it off,” Preston ordered.

The nurse did not move.

Instead, she slowly raised the hospital tablet resting against her hip.

A tiny recording indicator glowed near the corner.

“Say that again for the record.”

Preston’s jaw tightened.

For the first time that night, uncertainty crossed his face.

Elena turned toward Khloe.

The intern had spent the past month telling Preston that Elena humiliated her, sabotaged her work, and tried to get her dismissed.

Preston had believed every word.

Now Khloe released his arm and stepped backward.

The nurse tapped the tablet.

A blurred waveform appeared.

Elena watched Khloe’s eyes drop toward the medication cart.

“Ask her what she changed.”

The second nurse opened the drawer.

Inside lay a syringe with a mismatched label.

Beneath it was a torn piece of Elena’s consent form.

Preston’s anger vanished.

“What did you give her?”

Khloe said nothing.

The monitor produced one long warning tone.

The senior nurse struck the emergency button.

A surgical team appeared outside the delivery-room door.

As they prepared Elena for transfer, the nurse pulled a sealed consent form from beneath the tablet.

Preston’s signature was visible at the bottom.

Elena gripped his sleeve with what little strength she had left.

“You signed it before I arrived.”

Preston looked down.

May you like

Then he turned toward Khloe.

And the color drained from both their faces.
